Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Year: 2014

This was my personal vacation and my first trip to
Punta Cana. I stayed at the Catalonia Bavaro Beach, Golf & Casino
Resort. We had a standard junior suite.

I liked that this resort was only about a 20-minute drive from the airport.
The resort is large and I would say that it's about a 12-minute walk from
the lobby to the beach.

Our room was spacious and clean. The bathroom had a huge whirlpool tub and separate shower. The air-conditioning worked well. The maid service was sparse even after
leaving a tip. We had to ask twice for more towels.

The beach is lovely....white sand and lots of lounge chairs. There are lots of
trees so you can find shade if you are not able to secure a palapa
for the day. We were not bothered at all by beach vendors. In the
water there were some areas with seaweed but not a lot.
The animation team did activities at the beach and had loud music playing
but you could easily walk further down the beach to avoid the noise.
There is a beach bar as well.

The pool is large with a swimup bar. The pool is well-maintained. There are a lot of umbrellas and trees for shade.

There are two buffet restaurants. One located by the lobby and one near the beach. There was a good variety of choices and good quality. The lobby buffet has more choices. There are 4 a-la-carte restaurants: Mexican, Steakhouse, Japanese Teppanyaki, and Italian. I did not try the Mexican but the other 3 were very good.

There is a 24-hr snack bar located next to the pool. Here you can always get burgers, hotdogs, fries etc as well as pop and water.

The alcoholic drinks were of good quality (ie. not watered-down).

All staff were friendly and helpful, except when we checked-in. We could not find a bellman and got frustrated and tried to find our room on our own in the dark, only to find out it was on the 3rd floor. Luckily a maintenence man assisted us with
our luggage. Next time we will ask the check-in person to get a bellman for us.

There is a good mall about 20-minutes away. A taxi is about $15 per direction. Good quality souvenirs and you do not have to barter.

We did not take any excursions on this trip.
