Year: 2012

I travelled with Air Canada Vacations from Fredericton via Halifax.
I stayed overnight at the new Holiday Inn Express near the Halifax airport.
In Puerto Plata, I stayed at the 4-star GRAN VENTANA resort.
While there I took the opportunity to tour the following resorts nearby:
-Celuisma Playa Dorada
-Grand Paradise Playa Dorada
-Blue Bay Villas Doradas
-Barcelo Puerto Plata

I liked the Gran Ventana. It is located in the Playa Dorada complex along with a number of other resorts.  The complex has a small shopping mall with a restaurant and a sportsbar and there is a Coco Bongo's nightclub too. The resort itself does not have a disco.  It is difficult to use a credit card at the mall so make sure to bring cash with you.
I found the resort to be well maintained.  I enjoyed the beach.  The sand was nice and there were barriers in the ocean to keep the waves small.
Food was best at the buffet.  We only went to the a-la-cartes twice and did not find the food to be any better here.
The staff were friendly and helpful.  Entertainment was just so-so.  The animation team did the best they could with the resources they had.  One night a dance troupe came to the resort to entertain us.

Outside the resort there are taxis lined up ready to take you wherever you want to go.  We gave this a try instead of taking an organized excursion.  It was nice to be able to come and go as we pleased and we had a driver and guide.  Our guide stayed with us and looked after us.  The only drawback is that they do not understand how to use air conditioning in the taxi.....or they don't want to.  We were wishing we had taken the excursion to have some A/C relief.

About a 30min walk up the beach is the Orange Market where you can find a lot of souvenirs.  You must barter to get the best price.
