Itinerary – 2024 Ireland & Scotland Heritage Tour

Sat. Sept. 21: Depart Moncton @ 16:20 on AC 1565. Arrive Montreal @ 16:49. Depart Montreal @ 21:20 on AC 916. Arrive Dublin @ 8:30.

Sun. Sept. 22: Meet our COACH GUIDE/DRIVER Brian and drive in to Dublin City, the Kilkenny Café/Center is the first stop for you—feel the beat of the city, grab a coffee, look at some wares in the shop and maybe spend your first €uro? We will walk up Kildare St. to the NATIONAL MUSEUM (check out the ancient treasures and bog bodies) then meet up with Brian for a drive to GUINNESS STOREHOUSE (brewing, history, sky view, and indulge). Brian will take us to our hotel and you can have some free time to walk around Trinity College before you ‘sleep with the faeries’ at TRAVELODGE PLUS in DUBLIN City Center

Mon. Sept. 23: Enjoy an IRISH BREAKFAST at our hotel then all on board to more sites on a city tour with Brian. Visit ST. PATRICK’S CATHEDRAL (an amazing historical landmark) and walk the streets of many squares, shops, parks, museums, churches and pubs (esp. Temple Bar region!). Be prepared to see terrific Irish dancing, to hear incredible music and to taste delicious cuisine at our DINNER & SHOW this evening at Arlington Hotel. Rest well again tonight at TRAVELODGE PLUS in DUBLIN

Tues. Sept. 24: BREAKFAST again!! On the bus we go! At 10:30 we make a one hour ancestral stop this morning in Rathvilly, Co Carlow. Grab a coffee? At 12:30 we arrive for lunch in Kilkenny city- a city of medieval treasures. We will have 2 hours here. You can enjoy an entertaining TROLLEY RIDE and have a wee glance at Kilkenny Castle (stronghold of the loyal Butler family for 500 years). We head to Jerpoint for our 3:30pm SHEEP DOG DEMONSTRATION when Joe O’Connel shows his pride in his Border Collie. We leave here and drive past Jerpoint Abbey (ruins of a Cistercian Monk cloister founded in 1180) and we see parts of Waterford as we drive southwest. This is Viking country! Overnight where there is fine dining, a pool and a bar at THE PARK HOTEL, DUNGARVAN

Wed. Sept. 25: BREAKFAST. Drive to Youghal (short stop and stroll), Midleton (Choctaw Monument) and through Cork city Brian will point out the highlights. We ‘go west’ toward the Wild Atlantic Way (WAW) and make a few desired local genealogy stops before landing at our picturesque location of two nights. Have DINNER TOGETHER and you can join in or just sit back and enjoy the live entertainment in the bar at 9 pm, relax at the THE LAKE HOTEL “over in KILLARNEY”

Thurs. Sept. 26: BREAKFAST. This day is for exploring some of west Cork’s many villages that you have referenced as relevant to your ancestors (we will make a plan) or you can be adventurous and go on your own in the big city of Cork! Either way, we will help to orient you to have a full day’s experience of travel. We will talk! Oh yes, there are woolen shops in Killarney. Sleep well back at THE LAKE HOTEL, KILLARNEY

Fri. Sept. 27: BREAKFAST. This is a big day. We will leave at 8am to experience more of the Wild Atlantic Way on our route northward. See the renowned picturesque village of Adare then bear to the coast and see Lehinch, CLIFFS OF MOHER, the music town of Doolin and the countryside of Co. Clare. Drive on to the maritime city of Galway—home of the traditional Claddagh Ring! Do some shopping (jewellery, anyone?) at the brightly painted shops off Eyre Square, walk the cobbled streets and take a stroll along the boardwalks of Galway Bay. Let’s sing a slow song as we drive by the “Fields of Athenry”. At our next destination there is a 20m pool, a jacuzzi and a fitness center for your pleasure. Tonight, we have DINNER TOGETHER at ABBEY HOTEL in ROSCOMMON

Sat. Sept. 28: BREAKFAST. Later departure maybe??? Drive inland in the northeast and learn the story of how the NATIONAL FAMINE MUSEUM in Strokestown, Roscommon, came to be opened for public viewing. Here is where many people survived before eventually landing at Grosse Ile quarantine station in Quebec. Drive to Monaghan. Brian has lots of stories about his hometown. Let’s hear them!! We have some time to look around Monaghan town. Swim this evening? Help yourself to the beautiful facilities. DINNER TOGETHER at HILLGROVE LEISURE & SPA HOTEL IN MONAGHAN.

Sun. Sept. 29: BREAKFAST after a little ‘sleep in’?? You deserve a rest. Drive to Belfast and see some of the city hot spots before we tour the modern MUSEUM of the TITANIC. Our hotel is just one block from the infamous Crown Liquor Saloon. Sleep well at MALDRON HOTEL in BELFAST

Mon. Sept. 30: Grab a BOXED BREAKFAST on our early start for the FERRY RIDE. Cross the North Channel of the Irish Sea and arrive in Cairnryan, Scotland. We drive northward, by Ayr and Troon (where the Thetis of Troon was built and then carried immigrants that landed in Bay Chaleur and North Tetagouche). This region is where many Scottish people in Dalhousie, NB, hailed from. We pick up our interesting and entertaining SCOTTISH GUIDE, Andy, in Glasgow. Proceeding along the River Clyde and Loch Lomond we breathe in the fresh air of astonishing lakes and spectacular rugged mountains to end today’s voyage at a hotel with DINNER TOGETHER at BEST WESTERN THE CRIANLARICH HOTEL in CRIANLARICH, Scotland

Tues. Oct. 1: BREAKFAST. Drive to Loch Ness and explore the many parts of the interesting ruins of URQUHART CASTLE and enjoy the LOCH NESS JACOBITE CRUISE, keeping a close eye on the waters for Nessie. What a gorgeous spot! Climb onto the bus and off we “go the Highlands” for a tour of the ever-important historical CULLODEN then we finish our day in Inverness. Bunk down tonight at the traditional building and attractive gardens of LOCHARDIL HOTEL, INVERNESS

Wed. Oct. 2: BREAKFAST. You will see an abundance of remote wild landscape today. After a short stop at Corrishalloch Gorge we arrive in the ferry town of Ullapool on Lochbroom, the gateway to the Northern Highlands. Free time. You can grab lunch at the award-winning fish & chip shop in the village. Take an alternate route back to Inverness. You’ll have some free time to stroll and shop and eat and talk. Relax at LOCHARDIL HOTEL, INVERNESS.

Thurs. Oct. 3: BREAKFAST. Drive south in inland Scotland with a few quick stops along the route to exercise your limbs and purse strings. We are together this evening for a DINNER & SHOW SPIRIT OF SCOTLAND to revel in Scottish culture. Sleep soundly at VOCO HOTEL HAYMARKET, EDINBURGH

Fri. Oct. 4: BREAKFAST. Tour the city of Edinburgh with our guide’s charm and history to enlighten us about the landmarks and important sites. Visit legendary EDINBURGH CASTLE with a castle guide. Sat. Oct. 5: Up early to load luggage and check in at airport. Depart Edinburgh @ 9:00. Arrive in Toronto @ 11:05. Depart Toronto @ 14:15. Arrive in Moncton @ 17:15
